Our baby signing teachers
Emily - Founder and Teacher
Signing has been part of my life from a young age as my family have used Makaton to support communication with my younger sister. I then worked with a range of disabled children and adults before training as a Secondary School teacher. I taught for 8 years, in various settings.
When my first child was born, I knew signing was something I wanted us to do, but nothing prepared me for the impact it had on our relationship. It took her a while to get the first sign, but then it was an absolute whirlwind and she had over 100 signs by the age of 2. It helped us both immensely. When my second child was born, we signed with him from birth and he began signing milk at 4 months. I enjoyed signing with both of them so much, I decided to take my BSL level 1 and start Bright Buttons Baby Signing a few months later. I know that signing has deeply benefited our family, and I love bringing that success to other families! It is the absolute best job in the world and I feel so privileged to help others to connect and communicate with their little ones.

We started signing when my baby was 6 months, it was one of the first classes we had attended after the restrictions had started to lift. She is now over 2 years old and knows an impressive amount of signs which are used daily still alongside her speech.
Signing is such a useful tool for young children and parents to have as another form of communication. I believe it has helped us out of many situations that could have escalated into tantrums as we've had some basic understanding of each other through sign. Seeing first hand the benefits of signing and enjoying the classes for well over a year, I knew that I wanted to help pass on this fun and knowledge to other families as well.

Hannah - Teacher
I first became interested in baby signing when my best friend had her little girl. They started teaching her BSL as soon as she was born and I was really blown away with how early she could communicate with others. When I became pregnant with my own daughter there were 2 classes I knew without doubt I wanted to do; swimming and signing. Since started teaching Matilda to sign we haven't looked back. Her first 2 signs (milk and more) are still her most well used, but she now knows over 100 signs and has taught her grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles loads of signs too. Being able to communicate through signing has really helped Matilda to be more independent, be able to express her own voice and build a connection with her closest family members.
As a Primary School Teacher, attending Bright Buttons since 2020 (online and in person!) has really sparked my interest in early education and working with the whole family. I was over the moon when Emily approached me saying she was looking to extend the team and to see if I would be a Bright Buttons teacher as well. What an honour to help build connections between babies and their families as well as watching their faces light up in the classes I know my own daughter loves as well.
